JEE Physics can be the most scoring section if understood and applied well. The most important thing in learning physics for JEE Main as well as JEE Advanced is understanding the concepts very well. If you don’t understand the concept behind given problem, you would never be able to solve JEE Physics questions of that topic.
But, knowing ‘concepts’ and having ‘zero problem-solving skills’ will lead you nowhere. You see, knowing the concepts is not a big deal; many JEE aspirants know the concepts but only a few of them know the actual power of the concepts if used in the right way.
The kind of questions that are asked in JEE Physics are very practical and application based. Hence, it is easily understandable as the learners can relate it to the day to day experiences. It is very important to visualize the question in ‘real life form’ while trying to figure out solutions for many JEE Physics questions. JEE Physics is a scoring section, a good hold on it could really improve your rank.
Here are some good books for JEE physics:
- NCERT Physics Textbook (class 11th and 12th): NCERT textbook contains some of the basic materials explained very well, such as Semiconductors & Electronic devices, and Communication System – important topics of JEE Main. It is important that you master all the ‘basics’ before moving to more ‘advanced ideas’.
- H. C. Verma- Concepts of Physics (Part I & Part II): You should start each chapter or topic from H. C. Verma. Go through the entire theory, understand it well, and then attempt solved examples followed by the unsolved questions of that chapter. It is a BIBLE Book for JEE Physics and is necessary to form a strong base for all topics.
- Understanding Physics Series (Set of 5 Books) by D. C. Pandey (Arihant Publications): You will need these books for both reading theory and practicing Advanced level questions. These books contain a large number of solved and unsolved examples on particular chapters. Open these books once you have finished H. C. Verma and NCERT.
- Problems in General Physics by I. E. Irodov or Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday & Resnick: These books are generally a level above the general questions that are asked currently in JEE Advanced and may be considered optional. However, studying from these books will definitely give you an edge over other JEE aspirants.
- To complete your preparation, you are required to solve the past years’ JEE Physics paper (39 years Chapterwise Solved Paper by Arihant Publications).
Most important chapters/topics, which carry maximum weightage
- Mechanics: Projectile Motion, Relative Motion, Newton’s law of motion- Problems on FBD, Work, Power & Energy, Conservation of linear momentum, Centre of mass, Rotational Dynamics, Conservation of angular momentum, Simple Harmonic Motion, Gravitation – Motion of planets and satellites in circular orbits and Escape velocity.
- Heat & Thermodynamics: Calorimetry, Heat conduction in one dimension, Elementary concepts of Convection and Radiation, Isothermal and Adiabatic processes, First law of Thermodynamics and its applications (only for ideal gases).
- Sound Waves: Resonance, Beats, Speed of sound in different gases, Doppler effect (in sound).
- Electrostatics & Current Electricity: Coulomb’s law, Gauss’s law and its application in the simple case (to find electric field due to the long wire, uniformly charged infinite plane sheet and uniformly charged thin spherical shell), Capacitance – Parallel plate capacitor with and without dielectrics, Ohm’s law, Series and parallel arrangements of resistances and cells, Kirchhoff’s law and simple applications, Heating effect of current.
- Magnetism: Biot–Savart’s law and Ampere’s law, Force on a moving charge and on a current-carrying wire in a uniform magnetic field, Magnetic moment of a current loop.
- Electromagnetic Induction: Faraday’s law, Lenz’s law, Self and mutual inductance.
- Modern Physics: Dual nature of matter, Atoms, Nuclei. Photoelectric effect, Bohr’s theory of hydrogen-like atoms, Characteristic and continuous X-rays.
Some basic tips
- Go through entire theory, as it will help you to differentiate between situations. In JEE Advanced, you will face questions which appear to be a lot straight and formula oriented but they have a ‘deeper concept’.
- Mechanics is a base to the entire syllabus of JEE Physics. It accounts for 20-25% of the JEE question paper. If there is a question from Rotational dynamics in JEE Advanced paper, then it will check concepts from Newton’s law of motion, Work, Power & Energy, Centre of mass etc. Questions from any chapters can be linked with mechanics. These type of questions are very common in JEE Advanced. You are required to practice a lot on it.
- Ray Optics & Wave optics is an easy section. Memorize all the formulae and know their right implementation on different types of questions. Questions from wave optics (Interference, Polarization, and Diffraction), are generally straight forward and you can solve them easily by reading the question properly. For Ray Optics, Sign convention must be kept in mind while solving problems otherwise the question may go wrong.
- Modern Physics is a conceptual section. Read it thoroughly from H. C. Verma and NCERT. Mostly data based questions are asked from this chapter. Nuclei and atoms are very important from JEE Mains perspective. Numerical problems may involve some lengthy calculations, so be prepared for it.
- Memorize the Frequency and Range of each kind of Electromagnetic Wave. Theoretical chapters such as Communication System, Semiconductors are utmost important for JEE Main. There will be at least one question from each of these chapters in JEE Main.
- Electrostatics problems can be bit tricky to solve. Problems of electostatics seem to be scary at first, but do not worry — all you need is your willingness to solve problem. The only law which monitors electrostatics is Coulomb’s law, though most of the problems asked in JEE would test the concept of mechanics in it.
- Current electricity is one of the easiest chapters in JEE Physics. All you need is good numerical solving ability. Circuit problems can be easily done by applying Kirchoff’s Law (Junction and loop rule). Problems on Wheatstone Bridge, Metre Bridge and potentiometer are very common in JEE Main as well as JEE Advanced.
- Magnetism mainly focuses on conceptual understanding. Hence, there isn’t much chance for tricky questions. Having a command in this chapter will definitely give you an ‘edge over others’ because it has a huge weightage in the JEE Advanced paper.
- Electromagnetic induction and Alternating Current are one of the easiest topics in JEE physics, and one can easily score good marks in these chapters. It is bad decision to leave the questions from this section (many students do). Problems of moderate level are asked in JEE. There will definitely be a problem from LCR circuit either in JEE Main or JEE Advanced.
- Heat & Thermodynamics are one of the easy and scoring topics in JEE physics. However, the problems being put forward, even in JEE Main, cannot be solved until and unless you have a deep knowledge and a ‘rigorous practice’. Quite often, few of the classic problems are handpicked from JEE Advanced question paper, and you will have an advantage in JEE Main if you have already solved them.

- Solve mock test papers as well as Previous Years’ JEE Main and JEE Advanced Question Papers, or join any Test Series which you find more suitable.
