Why is it that whenever I masturbate, and I do so without the use of any kind of porn or lustful thoughts, I always feel guilty afterward and want to stop?
Dear deeply ashamed,
You are not alone, this is the problem for every teenagers who is between the age of 15 to 20. According to research, nearly 90% of male and 70% of females are doing this kind of activities. But the question is “Is it good or bad for us”.
Masturbation is actually a process when people touch their own bodies for sexual pleasure. People masturbate in lots of different ways. Touching your own body for sexual pleasure is different for everyone. Regarding in this way some health advisor say’s that it is perilous for our health but some says that it is good but infact there are lots of myths for masturbating.
Reason Behind that Why do people feel guilty after masturbation.
There are two reasons, one is psychological reason and other is physical reason. We discuss both here…
In many religions condemn masturbation and consider it a bad deed. If you come from a religious background then there is a much higher chance that you will experience more guilt if you did it.
Even if you are not that religious the fact that a part of you knows that you are doing something, that you consider wrong, will still make you feel guilty. During that time many people unconsciously regret the fact that they are single. Some others feel ashamed of the fact that they don’t have partners and that they have to self-please themselves
So yes, that is why many people felt angry, violated, confused and guilty after masturbating. The second problem was I always wondered in my childhood why did a ‘god’ give me such a feeling if the feeling was bad! So that is why just like me during my youth, I know so many youngsters feel very confused, guilty and ashamed about masturbation.
Right after you masturbate many of the happiness chemicals get withdrawn from the body and this makes your mind more prone to bad moods. The primary chemical is dopamine. As it rises your interest in sex increases. When you masturbate, these hormones rapidly rise and at orgasm there is a “dopamine storm” in your brain for a brief moment. This is followed by the release of a chemical called prolactin. It, in turn, causes your dopamine levels to suddenly decrease. Without this turn-off mechanism, damage would occur from the too high dopamine levels.
As a side-note many addictive drugs increase dopamine and some interfere with prolactin. You might think such would increase sexual abilities, but the opposite happens. The mechanism in the body burns itself out and one gets to the point of being unable to have sex unless high and eventually unable to have sex at all.
This sudden decrease in dopamine is what makes a guy suddenly feel sleepy after ejaculating. But if you stay awake, the decreased dopamine level induces a mild depression that lasts for about 20 minutes. It causes a sudden lose of interest in sex, which is actually needed to give the body a chance to recover from orgasm and the ejaculation. It is typically called the refractory period.
It is that sudden shift from sexual excitement to no interest and a mild depression that you are interpreting as guilt.
